Martin Travers (writer), Matilda Brown (composer and musician) and Martyn Robertson, (film maker) are appealing to the public to contribute to their Bothies project. Click the names to read about their bothy visits.
Five boxes have been placed in bothies across Scotland. You can find them in:
- Culra, near Dalwhinnie
- Doune Bothy, Loch Lomondside
- Burly Whag, Dumfries & Galloway
- Uags Bothy, by Applecross
- and on the Coulinpass between Achnashellach to Torridon.
Visitors to the Bothies will encounter a box containing a notebook, pencils and a camera and invited to share their experiences of bothying.
For those that won’t be passing, you can send your stories to bothy.box@nationaltheatrescotland.com.
Your stories will form part of the future project and will be shared on this website.
The project has the support of the Mountain Bothies Association.

Fab site, really clearly laid out; some moving stories too.
Loving the moody photographs.

Interesting project, could feature it on a new site table13.tv, bit more info required but I like it, planning many more boxes?
Hi There Euan
There are no more boxes planned at this stage as we want to collect the results from the boxes out there first.
We are also hoping that folk contribute directly through the microsite.
Thanks for getting touch – if there’s anything else you want to know about the project please let me know.

Matilda is going to Applecross today to pick up the stories and comments in the Uags Bothy Box today. Not sure if she’ll make it. The weather is closing in…
Great news. Matilda made it back from Applecross in one piece although it was like driving on a sheet of ice getting there. The Bothy Box contained lots of contributions – thanks to everyone that wrote in the book, sketched the hills or took a photograph!
Martyn, saw your feature on the tv and thought that I would let you know that myself and some friends did a film of a bothy trip and this was shown at the mountain film festival in 2005 (http://www.vimeo.com/dougiebonner/videos), it was also shown to the MBA, the filmmaker was Dougie Bonner, who now lives in France. The film is quite funny. I have been to loads of bothies and the most interesting is Strathchailleach where the last resident (Sandy) of the last mainland house in the uk without services has painted Gauguin style pictures on the walls. There are loads of stories, such as a friend of mine who swears that Ben Alder Cottage is haunted, althought I saw nothing when I was there…..
